Spanish bureaucracy language tips for Granada appointments
Bureaucracy in Spain moves best when you have the right words ready. In Granada, many desks will serve you politely but may not speak much English, and appointment slots can be scarce. A few key phrases can smooth things out, whether you are registering on the padrón, sorting a TIE, or picking up a card.
Below are the phrases locals actually use, plus mini scripts you can try at the counter or on the phone. We have added Granada specifics so you know which office handles what and how to ask for what you need.
Where and how to book in Granada
You will hear cita previa a lot. Most offices require it and often will not attend sin cita. In Granada, the main places expats deal with are the Policía Nacional for TIE fingerprints and pickups, the Oficina de Extranjería in the Subdelegación del Gobierno near Jardines del Triunfo for residence files, and the Ayuntamiento on Plaza del Carmen for padrón. The provincial DGT office handles driving matters, and Social Security has several counters in the city.
Booking usually happens online through each body’s sede electrónica. For Extranjería and Policía appointments you will select Provincia: Granada, then a trámite such as Toma de huellas or Recogida de tarjeta. For padrón, the City Hall website opens time slots for Atención Ciudadana. Screens often time out, so have your ID number ready.
- Policía Nacional: TIE fingerprints (toma de huellas), card pickup (recogida de tarjeta)
- Oficina de Extranjería: submitting or renewing residence authorisations
- Ayuntamiento de Granada: padrón, certificados and general citizen services
- DGT Tráfico: driving licence exchanges and appointments
- Seguridad Social: obtaining a social security number or alta

At the desk: polite mini scripts that work
Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early with your documents already in order. Granada offices are courteous but often brisk. These lines keep things smooth if you get nervous.

Documents, copies and paying fees
Expect to present both originals and copies. Many desks ask for fotocopias de todo. Around City Hall and near major government buildings you will find locutorios and copy shops that print, photocopy and take ID photos on the spot.
Some procedures require paying a tasa in advance, usually with Modelo 790. For TIE fingerprints it is often Modelo 790 Código 012. Bring the printed payment receipt stamped by the bank or the online proof of payment.

Granada-specific tips and how to troubleshoot
Slots for TIE and Extranjería can appear early morning or at random times. Refreshing the booking page through the week often works better than trying only on Mondays. The City Hall padrón system opens new windows regularly, and some neighborhood offices free up last-minute slots.
Security at larger buildings may check your confirmation. If you truly cannot get a slot and your permit is time sensitive, you can ask at the information desk if there is registro for submitting a written request or aportar documentos.
- If the screen says No hay citas: try different trámites that match your case and check again later in the week.
- Ask: ¿Atienden sin cita para recoger tarjeta? Some desks have a pickup window with short hours.
- If late: He llegado tarde por el transporte.
- If you must complain formally: Quisiera una hoja de reclamaciones, por favor.
Understanding Andalusian Spanish on the day
Granada staff may speak quickly and drop some final consonants. Do not be shy about asking for clarity. These requests are polite and normal.
- ¿Puede repetirlo más despacio, por favor?
- ¿Me lo puede escribir aquí? = Can you write it here for me?
- No le he entendido bien. = I did not quite understand.
- ¿Se refiere a este documento o a este otro? = Do you mean this document or the other one?
- ¿Dónde tengo que entregar esto exactamente? = Where exactly should I submit this?
