The Paperwork You Need After Moving to Granada

Spanish bureaucracy is many people's least favourite part of moving here. Knowing the pieces and roughly what order to tackle them in makes it far less overwhelming.

This is a general overview, not legal advice. For legal and immigration matters, always consult a qualified professional.

1. NIE

Your foreigner identification number is needed for almost everything. The process depends on your nationality and situation, and appointments can be hard to get, so start early.

2. Empadronamiento

Registering your address at the town hall unlocks other steps like healthcare and school registration. It is usually one of the first things to do once you have an address.

3. Bank account and SIM

A Spanish bank account and a local SIM make daily life much easier and are needed for many services and contracts.

4. Healthcare and digital certificate

Register for healthcare according to your status, and consider getting a digital certificate, which lets you handle many processes online and saves a lot of queuing.
